ABRALIN is pleased to announce the two nominees for the title of Honorary Member of the Association, following the review of nominations submitted by the community and ratified by the current honorary members.

The names put forward are Sírio Possenti and Maria Marta Pereira Scherre, whose trajectories have been recognized for their intellectual production, their role in training researchers, and their active participation in the institutional development of the Brazilian scientific community.

The nominations converge on three major dimensions that appeared consistently in the justifications submitted by the community: academic contributions to the consolidation of research fields, the training of new generations of scholars, and commitment to scholarly and associative life in Brazil.

In the case of Sírio Possenti, the nomination emphasizes his decisive role in Discourse Studies, a field in which he is widely recognized as a reference for its development and consolidation in Brazil. The justifications also stress the consistency of his theoretical contribution, his role in training researchers who now work at universities across the country, and his continued presence in ABRALIN through debates, events, and activities connected to the field.

The nomination of Maria Marta Pereira Scherre points to her pioneering trajectory in Linguistics, with work regarded as a landmark in the advancement of research in Brazil. Her academic leadership, her strong role in the training of researchers, and her long record of participation in ABRALIN, including service on the Association’s Board, were also emphasized. The community likewise recognized her sustained dedication to strengthening and expanding fields of study in Brazil.

The granting of the title of Honorary Member represents a form of public recognition for trajectories that have left a lasting mark on research, academic training, and the collective construction of Brazilian linguistics.

Suggestions were also made for the nomination ceremony in order to make the occasion even more meaningful, including the invitation of a colleague to deliver a laudatio for each honoree, the presentation of the Honorary Member diploma in a high-quality printed format, and the offering of flowers as a gesture of appreciation and recognition from the Association.

With the nomination of Sírio Possenti and Maria Marta Pereira Scherre, ABRALIN pays tribute to two trajectories of great importance to linguistics in Brazil and to the history of the Association itself.
